Kitchen cabinet maintenance: a basic care guide

Simple cleaning and checking habits so your custom kitchen looks good and works the same for many years.

A well-made custom kitchen can last twenty years or more, but only if it gets minimal care. The good news is that it does not take much time: a few weekly habits and a yearly check are enough to keep it like new.

Daily and weekly cleaning

Wipe up spills right away, especially liquids near edges and hinges. Use a soft cloth dampened with water and a few drops of mild soap, and dry it immediately.

Once a week, go over the fronts, handles and countertops. Avoid abrasive sponges, undiluted bleach and solvent-based cleaners, because they dull the finish and wear down the edges.

Look after the critical spots

Three areas cause almost all moisture damage:

  • Around the sink: check that the silicone sealant is not lifting or cracked.
  • Under the sink: dry any drip from the trap or hoses before it reaches the board.
  • Near the stove and oven: do not let hot steam rise straight against the upper doors.

If you see a leak, shut off the water and dry everything; a swollen board never returns to its shape.

Hinges, slides and hardware

Doors and drawers that close softly are a sign of healthy hardware. Once a year, open every door and drawer, check that nothing rubs and tighten the hinge screws with a screwdriver.

Drawer slides appreciate a drop of silicone spray lubricant. Do not use cooking oil, because it attracts dust and turns sticky.

What to do about stains and odors

Grease stains come off best with warm water and a drop of mild detergent, without scrubbing hard. For persistent odors inside the cabinets, leave a cup of baking soda for a day and replace it every month.

If you spill something that stains, such as coffee, wine or sauces, wipe it up right away; many stains stop being a problem if treated in the first minutes. On wooden surfaces, never leave pooled liquid, and always dry in the direction of the grain.

For built-in appliances, clean the ventilation grilles with a dry brush. Accumulated dust strains the motor and also stains nearby doors.

Countertops and surfaces

If your countertop is wood, apply food-safe mineral oil every three or four months. If it is quartz or laminate, water and mild soap are enough.

Always use a cutting board and a trivet for hot pots. A direct heat shock or a deep cut leaves marks that are hard to hide later.

A simple care calendar

So you do not forget anything, you can follow this rhythm: each week, clean fronts and countertops; each month, check the sealant and the drawers; each year, a general adjustment of hinges and slides.

Noting the date in your phone calendar helps keep the habit. Ten minutes of timely care avoid much longer repairs, and your kitchen will keep its look for many years.
